Final Big Channel Challenge Results

Posted: 3rd February 2020

During January 2020, Tettenhall College participated in the ISA and Level Water Big Channel Challenge, designed to swim across the Channel, a distance of 33.3km, from Dover to Calais, raising funds for their registered charity, providing bespoke one to one lesson’s for children up to 11 years, with a physical or sensory disability.

A total of 214 swimmers embraced this Challenge, with the whole College contributing, from Pre-School, up to Sixth Form, which was truly magnificent.

Collectively, they swam a total distance of 172196m, or 106.99miles! To give some perspective, they swam to Calais and back twice and then back to Calais.

All swam with lots of enthusiasm, most taking advantage of the new lap counters, kindly provided by Mr. Bullock, recording the following distances; Prep-School 77819.5m (48.35miles) and Senior School 94376.5m (58.64miles).

During some sessions, some fifty swimmers completed distance badge awards, notably; Jamie Welch (Y5) and Eddie Burke (Y6) 2000m.

The following swimmers achieved the furthest distances:

Top Boy overall – Sammy McDonnell (Y7), 7398m and Top Girl overall, Lydia Wynne (Y6), 5832m.

The highlight for me, has to be an act of kindness towards another swimmer. Our current reigning ISA National Champion, Sammy McDonnell, volunteered to encourage another swimmer to complete his distance. He swam alongside, giving plenty of support, which demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and dedication.

Congratulations everyone, we smashed it!
