On Tuesday 5th February Tettenhall College’s Business and Economics department led an eye-opening trip to Jaguar Land Rovers assembly plant in Solihull, resulting in an interesting, inspiring day enjoyed by all. Upon arrival to JLR we were promptly suited up and given a safety brief before being invited on an in depth tour of the plant. The tour was fascinating – we were shown the press shop and body shop, which were both fully automated environments with a small number of staff required to check quality. We discovered that each robot used in the plant was purchased by JLR for over half a million pounds – and there were over 5,000 robots in use at the Solihull site alone! After lunch we were invited to participate in 4 activities related to quality control and efficiency – which was also a brilliant exercise in team building and communication skills! This truly was an inspirational trip – after the trip several students were so inspired that they are now considering an apprenticeship with JLR. We would like to thank Mr Groom and Mrs Nash for organising this opportunity to truly see how a business functions!
