Tettenhall College offers a String Programme for Year 2 pupils as a taster to learning the violin more formally in individual lessons. Children learn the violin in small groups during this time, and the instruments are provided by the school. This programme has proven to be an effective starting point for our keen instrumentalists as they start out on their musical journey.

Following a highly successful launch of our Prep School Band, we invite all instrumentalists to be a part of this group who rehearse weekly. All pupils learning an instrument, are strongly encouraged to be a part of this large group. Children perform frequently in various events, including the ‘Tettenhall College Last Night of the Proms’ or assemblies for example.

Pupils may take part in our excellent Prep School Choir where they are expected to show commitment and to perform frequently at a variety of events and occasions. Choir meets weekly to practise and rehearse.

All pupils receive weekly singing lessons where we practise for productions, shows, assemblies and events. Children study various genres and styles of music including the sacred, popular and songs from musicals.

We employ a wide number of visiting teachers who each specialise in different instruments for individual tuition. Pupils normally spend approximately 20 minutes per session with their music teacher, and are withdrawn from their normal lessons on a rotation basis (to avoid missing the same thing each week). All instrumental lessons are an extra cost.

Children also learn a variety of instruments, recorders and percussion plus ukuleles, in their weekly instrumental music lessons. This becomes more formal in Years 3 to 6 as part of the Performing Arts Rotation on Wednesday afternoons.
